Cyberpunk had a weird prudishness problem

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:07 PM PDT

Cyberpunk is weirdly prudish and I want to talk about it

Ok so first I just want to say that this is not coming from horny-ness; I know that there are other games I can get for it, and I don't really get off on animated people. Just while playing the game I've felt like cdpr has shied away from more uncomfortable moments, which they advertised heavily in the campaign. Many themes which I am really interested in were heavily talked about, but I feel like the game depicts nudity in a really prudish and child-like way. I was lying awake last night thinking a lot about this, and I've broken my thoughts into a couple different sections.

    Non-Sexual Nudity

When this game was being advertised I thought that there were gonna be naked people in the streets, pants down at urinals, just a super desensitized community. People walk around naked in California in modern-day for god's sake! The game just completely seems to be uncomfortable with the naked human body, or cautious of certain countries and demographics which would possibly be frustrated with this more raw and apathetic society. Also, I could see someone reading this and see people thinking I sound like a lunatic, but I know that I'm not the only one who thought that there would be way way more; I remember people theorizing about naked quests, bath-houses, nude-beaches, the like. There's not even practical nudity! They never have Jackie change in front of you, no one strips down on the beach, no outdoor showers in the badlands, just a very shying away from the human body in a game which is supposed to be all about the body. I don't know, maybe I am some crazy heretic, but I always think back to the quest with a pantsless man, a fairly short, comical side quest, where the game still refused to show even a butt in the most non-sexual way possible, instead opting to attach his shirt-tail to his ass, never lifting off, for some reason? Tell me if I'm wrong for being frustrated by this but I don't think I am. I mean you can't even go bottomless in public! What the hell! Ok I'll move onto the next topic

    Superficial Eye-Candy

A lot of the ads, signs and shop displays show that the city is very adult, but the game does not do the work to make this a part of the story. Very very interesting themes are brought up briefly, such as objectification, medical sexual enhancements, prostitution, it's all over the radio and TV. Similarly to many other parts of the game, it is all looks and no substance; people said that this game was the most adult out there but it really just doesn't take the responsibility seriously, there must be so many vulnerable people in night city because of the way which sex and desensitization effects society. It feels like the game is afraid to have these discussions or explore the nuances, at least to me.

    Gender Double-Standard

Ok this one is very frustrating to me and I'm pretty sure I'm right; this game totally shies away from male nudity. I mean the male strippers are fully clothed! It's no coincidence they slapped underwear on that guy in the ice bath from the demo but not on the girl. As you walk around the city women are totally sexualized, but for some reason go all mormon on the guys. Yes you can have sex with guys but you have to go out of your way to do that, while the majority of posters, signs and public displays are of women. Night City surely has plenty of gay or fluid/bi/pan guys? And also women? It seems very objectifying to me and we already had this whole conversation with game of thrones, it's dumb that we have to have it all over again.

Anyway, hopefully people understand that this really is not from a horny mind, but I think that the game doesn't want to go far at all. I mean you can rip someone's arm off but you can't even see genitals during sex? Many R-rated movies show genitals during sex! It's not that big a deal cdpr, the general public seems pretty apt for these types of conversations, which you can see by looking at the popularity of shows like big-mouth to shows like euphoria or a handmaids tale. I mean I guess I could be horny. IDK.

The game has the potential for some sandbox activities. This requires fine-tuning and appropriate NPC settings (as well as bug and glitch removal).

Cyberpunk 2077: The Good, The Bad, and the Broken

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 03:27 PM PDT

After some 200+ hours I'm finally reaching a point where I'm ready to meet Hanako at Embers and close out my first playthrough.

So I figure now is a good time to give my thoughts on what the game does well, where it misses the mark, and where it's downright unfinished.

Just to set expectations up front, I'm making my commentary only based on the product itself.

I realise there was a glut of marketing hype before release and CDPR flew too close to the sun, delivering a product that many felt fell short of the hype. If you think CDPR "lied" to you, then you'll get no arguments from me to either confirm or disavow such a notion. I'm treating my own impressions of the delivered product as if I'd gone in completely "blind".

Insofar as the technical side of things, I'll leave the performance analysis to the experts, like Digital Foundry. I've played on PS4 Pro on the system's internal HDD storage.

The most I can say on last-gen performance is that -- while I never experienced anywhere close to "Crowbcat montage" levels of brokenness -- shipping to last-gen hardware was a mistake, given the severe compromises made just to make the game hold 20-30fps. But I'm also glad I got to experience Night City without having to wait months or years until getting a PS5. So, swings and roundabouts, I suppose.

Soooo, as Roger Smith would say, it's time to DIVE ON IN!

    THE GOOD:

✅ Night City itself is hands down the best fictional city of any open world game I've seen or played. Period. Each district, each neighborhood, and even each street has a distinct visual style and identity. The architecture and lore-friendly approach to city planning are almost overwhelming in their detail, scale, density, and variety. Even after dozens of hours exploring on foot, I still find myself filling in blanks in my mental map of the space. I also like how ramshackle encampments and civilian populations kinda fill in the cracks left over from years of city planning that put corporate expedience above civilian utility. I could write an entire essay just on this, but we'd be here all day.

✅ The atmosphere of the world (at least before being nerfed on PS4 with the 1.23 patch gutting visual effects like dynamic particles, smoke, surfaces shading, etc) is intoxicating to experience at walking pace. Night City is a cacophony of lights, noises, and environmental storytelling. Yes, the NPCs don't hold up to closer scrutiny in terms of reactive AI, but as long as you "look but don't touch" to some degree, CP2077's realisation of Mike Pondsmith's dystopian corpo-nightmare-metropolis can be utterly transportive and all-consuming, especially with house lights dimmed and a good set of headphones.

✅ The side quests and gigs are a lot of fun once you commit to a specialised playstyle. I resisted the urge to cheese the easily-breakable combat system + progression meta. Playing as a katana + pistol combo build, I found combat made me feel like John Wick meets Ghostrunner. I look forward to pushing the combat sandbox with a flex-netrunner build next playthrough.

✅ The people you meet are consistently interesting, well-written, and are staged well during key plot points. The blending of procedural animations and quest-driven mo-cap acting is a treat to behold, even though the hierarchy of character detail means minor characters sometimes look a bit stiff and flat compared to the 'leading' guys and gals. Some surprisingly emotional story beats got me invested in the human core hiding under Night City's (intentionally) facile and narcissistic exterior.

✅ The soundtrack is incredible. Between the ambient/quest-triggered OSTs, and the radio station music , and the corporate jingles blasting unceremoniously from every other shop speaker and billboard, there must be a good 20 hours or more of original music here. I suspect the community won't fully appreciate what a musical accomplishment CP2077 is for some time yet, given the negativity around other less-developed aspects that are easier to point out and dissect at a casual glance. But there's magic in the music, both diagetic and non-diagetic.

✅ The cars, weapons, and apparel are all exquisitely detailed, right down to the individually modelled bullet trails from guns, the individual stitchings/ fibres/ materials in the clothes, and the fully modeled car interiors and engine details under the hood. Oh, and I like how cars drive, there I said it. Handling needs some oversteer reduction or something though. If CDPR got the Forza Horizon guys to audit their handling model, they could tweak it to something really awesome.

    THE BAD:

❌ Borderlands style leveled loot system and cluttered UI creates redundancies, and pushes you towards min-maxing DPS and armour stats above all else, making it hard to develop "affinity" with your preferred gear + loadouts. (Unless you actively buck against the meta and opt for form over function.) As a result, many of the more interesting stats and immersive sim like gameplay systems get lost in the mindless pursuit of "more DPS" and "more stat grinding".

❌ As much as I love Night City, I'm not unaware that it's relatively "static", and fairly devoid of emergent gameplay opportunities seen in RDR2 or even Watch Dogs Legion. Ambient NPCs are interesting enough when kept at Covid levels of social distancing, but trying to interact with them beyond a superficial level produces only frustration and awkwardness. You may serve the ball, but they rarely hit a return swing, save for the odd repeating line of generic dialogue, or a sudden impulse to flee in terror. Combat AI fairs much better than it gets credit for, but like I said, you have to actively choose NOT to cheese combat encounters. Enemies are roughly as smart as you let them be, but you'll always be smarter by a pretty wide margin.

❌ Weird pacing issues compounded by a slapdash means of introducing side content (ie: "here's your quest markers, go do them whenever, maybe, idgaf"). On one hand we're told V could drop dead any day now, yet on the other hand we can leave Hanako waiting at Embers for weeks on end without a shred of urgency. I mean, it's fine to let players dictate their own pace, but when the main story hinges on a perception of urgency, its hard to escape the feeling I'm actually controlling two separate Vs. One V, a badass merc who picks up odd jobs from fixers and fucks people up for a sort-of-honest buck. And another V, a vulnerable hospice patient desperately fighting a voice inside her head as the abyss closes around her. Both equally compelling Vs, but the disconnect between the two feels like I'm playing "A Tale of Two Cyberpunks".

    THE BROKEN:

☠️ An inescapable and growing feeling that there was so much more to what could have been, if only CDPR delayed to a 2023 release as the rank-and-file devs had reportedly expected. Entire areas closed off to the player, remnants of objects that might have been useable, doors that might've been unlocked, characters that might've been fleshed out.

☠️ The PS4 version either looks great but performs horribly (pre 1.23 patch), or performs somewhat stable yet is visually sparse and flat-looking (post 1.23 patch),despite the obvious geometric detail of the world itself, which admittedly is impressive to see even run on PS4 at all. Damn it CDPR, just kill this loss management cycle, and focus on an amazing next gen experience, please, and I say that as someone who's locked in on PS4 for some time yet.

Anyone know why my screen is doing this pls help lol

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 08:55 PM PDT

it looks to me like all the "leaked" news which came in early Jan, which CDPR labeled as fake has kind of come true...

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 09:25 PM PDT

this is the post im talking abut - https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/kpl567/alleged_cdpr_dev_talks_about_the_state_of/

the post talked about things which have kind of come true. like,

They talked about how the devs are targeting June to be a major month for the game and now we know that the game came back on PS store in june and also their have been new of how CDPR is satisfied with the performance.

The post also talked about how there were plans for underground tunnel system which also looks like the devs were really working on it. source : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQofYIJlGto&t=2s&ab_channel=DeconstructingTheGame

also it talked about there will be some major people leaving the company which also came true. (this was kind of obvious though)

The post also talked about there being the NCPD AI which stopped working mid development for some reason and now we do have a mod which is somehow able to made cop car chases actually possible. mod source - https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/1672

This post coming out in early january is kind of crazy because it doesnt really have very obvious things and someone with no mods back then could not have know about the tunnels and the cop ai and stuff.

Is this a joke because I thought FOR SURE I would actually find a flashlight to attach to the guns but I googled it and I cant' seem to find that this is a thing. Is this for real? Why did the devs go so above and beyond with some stuff and then leave out things so stupid? FML...

I believe this game is a masterpiece and will only get better with time.

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:52 PM PDT

I got it on Xbox Series X and I'm playing it on quality mode at 4k HDR. That means it runs only at about 30 frames per second but I absolutely love it nonetheless! I am blown away by the amount of detail in the environments, vehicles and characters. The music and the ambience really make you feel like you're there. I love the industrial feel.

I don't want to rush through the game or fast travel because I'm so absorbed in the universe. Just taking my time with everything is so enjoyable.

I hope we get expansions and updates for a long time. I love this game.

To the developers and artists who worked on this for years; you are all amazing and created something really special! Thank You.
