Why it's okay to be hyped (long read) Posted: 11 May 2020 05:30 PM PDT There seems to be a decent amount of uneasiness regarding Cyberpunk 2077. The game was arguably the most hyped game in the industry BEFORE they announced Keanu Reeves was in it. So the game has a significant amount of pressure on it which has led to a bit of cynicism about the game for obvious reasons. Keeping expectations low is good for avoiding disappointment but I don't want to speak of Cyberpunk 2077 in the context of hype as much as in the context of trust. Believe or not, there actually have been games before that were also the most hyped games in the industry from the moment they were announced, that actually did live up to the general hype. Skyrim was a big one. That was probably the best example of never losing a step from announcement to release because it was the most anticipated game of 2011 and when it came out, it almost universally swamped the goty awards that year and is still a very relevant game 9 years later. Red Dead Redemption 2 would be another one as it was hyped from the start and won the second most goty awards of 2018 when it came out. GTA 5 is another one as it was the most hyped game of 2013 and ended up becoming the best selling entertainment product ever that is also still very relevant today as well as second in goty awards. By general standards, these games succeeded the hype even if one person may not have particularly enjoyed them. Understand the developer, what they are doing, what they have done, and what they are generally good at. In my opinion, if you were someone who was extremely hyped for Fallout 76 for example, I'd say that you were setting yourself up to fail because what is Bethesda good and bad at and what are general tendencies of online games? They usually make games with a ton of technical problems and are best when it comes to interacting with characters in the world. Except there were no characters in Fallout 76. Online games on top of that, almost always have big technical problems at the start just for being online and Bethesda game studios had never made an online game in their entire history. That's about a couple dozen red flags just off that. How many things in the new game are things the developer has never made before? Is it a multiplayer focused developer suddenly making a single player focused story game or vice versa? Is the developer unproven or vague? No Man's Sky's launch would be a perfect example of this even though they have significantly improved the game in recent memory. Games like Destiny and the Division would also fit in this category. If the dev is being vague about the genre and what exactly you're going to be doing in the game, consider that a red flag. Does the developer have an ideal history? This one can be harder but it helps you know what games might just be very good and what might be "hype blowing masterpieces." For example, my personal peak expectation for Assassin's Creed Valhalla would be very good. Why? Because there's been dozens of these games and Assassin's Creed has plummeted as much as it's peaked with general negative consensus towards games like Assassin's Creed 3 and Assassins Creed Unity so the franchise has plateaued a bit. Due to this, it's a gamble to be super hyped for every game in the series or expect a masterpiece. This would also apply to other companies who have had as many valley's as peaks (or more recent valley's) like Bioware, Bethesda, Halo, Call of Duty, ID software, Dice, etc. The quality of publishers should also be taken into account such as EA, Activison, or Bethesda. Does the developer of the game have controversy incited by the studio? Oh boy there's a ton of examples of this and it's sad because a lot of these developers before these controversies would be ones you would've generally considered trustworthy. You can pretty much toss any game with microtransactions in this category cause those always have the potential to be problematic. Bioware had a facial animation controversy before Mass Effect Andromeda came out as well as the whole ME3 ending debacle. Naughty Dog is currently going through a massive controversy regarding the leaks and rumors at the studio. Who's the best? In terms of western AAA developers who are generally trustworthy to make consistent high quality products and masterpieces included with very few rare dips, you're usually going to point to Rockstar, CD Projekt Red, and Naughty dog (up until the leak fiasco). In terms of falling off though, these devs have not yet plummeted (at least not until The Last of Us part 2 releases) from their pedestals. Maybe some Sony developers could be included as fringe masterpiece/very good but with less notoriety like Santa Monica, Sucker Punch, or Guerrilla. Even the best devs can have potential red flags. Rockstar's games have microtransactions, Naughty Dog is currently having its worst controversy ever, and CDPR is a young studio. All three of them have had complaints regarding worker rights. Bioware and Bethesda used to be some of the standards for game development so we know anyone can fall. So looking at what red flags we have regarding other developers, how does this apply to Cyberpunk 2077? What do we know so far? -We know that Cyberpunk 2077 is a game CDPR is capable of making. They're not making any risky genre switches where we're now expecting a shared world game with a battle royale mode like Fallout 76 from a team that has only made RPG's. CP77 from what we've seen, appears consistent with the traits of the Witcher 3. Any and all multiplayer content for CP77 has been specifically regarded as a "down the road" project that is not the priority until all relevant singleplayer content is out. The only really big transition would probably be the switch from third person to first person which is tame by other studio standards. -They aren't vague about anything. When they say no microtransactions, they mean no microtransactions. When they say expansions will be as huge as the Witcher 3's, we can usually trust that because that's what they've done before and it means that they are aware of the standard the Witcher 3 set. They specifically show you what is gameplay and what is CG (looking at you Ubisoft). -They have an ideal history that has seen a general progression. Witcher 1 was their first game ever and was a dated cult classic. Witcher 2 was a goty contender in 2011. Witcher 3 and its expansions were universally considered masterpieces that have directly contributed to a lot of the hype CP77 has gotten. Of course, they're young and haven't made any non Witcher games yet so one could consider that a potential red flag. -The development of CP77 has had little to no controversies perpetrated by the game or developer. No microtransactions. No leaks. Everything that's supposed to be airtight is airtight. Even when the game wasn't relevant until its big E3 reveal in 2018, CP77 continued to reassure that it was not in development hell and nothing appeared to have been scrapped or started over on. Any and all controversies associated with the game have started from external sources in reaction to features based upon entirely political and inclusive reasons (LGBT, Twitter, etc), not game feature reasons. The closest thing to perpetrated controversy by CDPR would be the accusations of worker abuse made several years ago after the Witcher 3 came out. -We know CDPR has a very unique relationship with fans where so much effort has gone into consumer friendly practices. No microtransactions. Full game sized DLC sold at DLC prices. Story focused games. The deals they've made with Xbox to get CP77 for free when transitioning next gen consoles. A Polish studio that is not at risk of being absorbed or manipulated by North American media standards. A studio that publishes its own games so are not at risk of having things changed or manipulated due to corrupt publisher intervention. The last developer I can remember having such a fan friendly relationship would probably be Bungie during the Halo 3 days. What's this mean? Well in general, it could mean nothing. Despite their pedigree and hype, any game can still fall off a cliff. It could also mean something though. Considering the perception of not believing hype being considered a logical stance, it could also be a logical stance to trust a developer that has the kind of pedigree CDPR has and when you look at the actual progression of CP77. There literally has never been a more trustworthy candidate. [link] [comments]

Gamedec Interview – Cyberpunk 2077 Connection, Progression System, Combat, Replay Value Posted: 11 May 2020 03:44 PM PDT In a recent interview, lead producer Magdalena Cielecka called Cyberpunk 2077 as a "genre-defining" game that will likely impact the cyberpunk universe for all games. That being said, it was the series of books by author Marcin S. PrzybyÅ‚ek — the Gamedec series — that eventually convinced Anshar Studios to create Gamedec in the end. [link] [comments]

How are you passing time before release? (Aside from normal day to day stuff) Posted: 11 May 2020 10:56 PM PDT For me, ever since the delay we got back in January, I've made pretty heavy efforts to compile a proper "pile of shame" list of games I never finished. I've been trying to click through as many as I can. Additonally, I've started deliberately rationing tv shows I love, but forcing myself to watch one episode of a show a day (as an example, I spent 100 days gradually watching all 100 episodes of Curb your enthusiasm). I've separately been making a list of cyberpunk related media (blade runner, altered carbon ect) and held off watching any of it before release. Lastly, I've tried to avoid rewatching the avaliable gameplay as much as I can. Mainly because I don't want to destroy the little footage we have. Any other time passing tips? This reddit community has been invaluable for engaging with fellow fans. [link] [comments]

Will there be a way to not kill dum dum? Posted: 11 May 2020 08:10 AM PDT I've thought of every outcome that the mission could have and I think it all turns out the same way. I like dum dum and his character. Dont wanna kill him because he's weirdly likeable. [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 May 2020 01:27 AM PDT Everyone is hanging on to every bit of info so its kinda weird I have address this since its been confirmed by the devs TO DEATH but with every post that its brought up there are a few people that are wrong and spreading wrong info. So to make it fully clear right now there will be full frontal Nudity. THAT IS 100 PERCENT REAl. That means dicks and pussies are going to be shown throughout the course of the game. As soon as we load up character creator we are gonna see our junk as to customize it. The only places where this will not be the case is where certain countries that simply dont allow this much nudity like Japan. So anyone telling people that there isnt gonna be full nudity stop. If anyone was confused here ya go. Again its been confirmed so many times stop acting like it hasnt. Additional Edits: People asking how I can possible know can google it im not gonna babysit you and give you every single link. As far as chances of censorship at least here in the states I would be just a little concerned. This is just my own personal feeling but sony has been a little tight with full nudity but Im optimistic. No full nudity wont bump it up to AO what matters is context and how much there is and if there is actual full pov sex which there isnt. The game is rated M and theres full nudity there ya go. If you look up AO games they are all mostly just pure porn games. [link] [comments]
