Night City is the nicest open world city in gaming

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 06:01 PM PST

Being from an urban area this game gives me the feeling I get walking through center city. Im a speck of dust in a busy world where everyone has somewhere to be and their own problems. The melting pot of cultures that tend to happen is nailed in NC, and just talking walks leave me lost for words just how much they got it right. With the new update it only is brought out so much more and I feel its a game ill play for a long time just for visuals alone.

A common critique of this game's story I see is tied to a misconception: Cyberpsychosis, Lizzie Wizzie, etc...this game doesn't hate technology, it hates our culture and the system that drives our decision-making.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 09:44 PM PST

I see TOO MANY articles and videos critiquing this games story and how it somehow is saying that technology is bad and that it dehumanizes us and that yet it doesn't engage in that with gameplay when it comes to our augmentations.

How?! How are you getting this message?

I feel like people have a preformed opinion and just LOOK for it in the game, and then ignore all counter-evidence that would showcase their opinion is actually not the game's. Then giving the game shit for not fully dedicating itself to THEIR idea.

This game goes OUT OF ITS WAY....ALL THE TIME....to not blame technology for problems. Cyberpunk AS A GENRE goes out of its way to showcase that technology isn't the problem...it's the culture that pushes us to use technology for the wrong reasons and for the wrong outcomes.

Technology isn't dehumanizing us. WE do that. Technology is simply an extension of us. Swapping your legs out or an eye isn't removing your humanity. That's absolutely fuckin ridiculous. It makes no sense. A dude with a peg leg isn't LESS human because he decided to wear a peg to replace his leg. He just doesn't have an organic leg. A trans person isn't less human because they used technology to change their physical gender. Their intentions are what mattered.

In almost EVERY quest where technology is a factor as the villain, it's never the "technology"...it's the culture we already have using that technology for the worst. The technology EMBODIES that commodification or that trauma or that cost...but it itself is not the actual problem.

The cyberpsychos mission is the clearest example of this misconception.

If you DIDN'T read anything in the quest you'd think "yes, these people are suffering from bad tech and it is driving them crazy"....NO, they are getting kidnapped...BY PEOPLE. They have companies taking away their entire livelihood because they were fired. They have corporate backed government wars where they are tasked to die and be scarred because they needed the money. THESE are the problems...not the technology they happened to have installed. The cybermodified lady isn't trying to kill you because machines are just giving her bloodlust...no she thinks you are part of the group that just replaced her whole ass body for parts as part of a ceremony after kidnapping her. They are DEEPLY traumatized. They are DEEPLY afraid of the society they exist within and the people within it.

Lizzie Wizzie is the perfect example of how it's not TECHNOLOGY...it's the person.

The smartest thing this game did was drop the "dehumanizing technology" concept and actually engaged with our humanity. Lizzie Wizzie isn't crazy because of her robot body...she's fuckin crazy because she was willing to have a robot body in the pursuit of her career. She was willing to give up everything about herself and what she was to become a living commodity...and so she begins to also dehumanize those around her, and become possibly violent. She didn't value her own humanity, she didn't value her own body, she only saw it as something that she could replace to enrich herself...and so when someone in her life is no longer enriching her, they are expendable.

There are so many examples of people in the game that have plenty of cybermods but because of the circumstance for WHY they have them, they aren't crazy or bad or inhumane. This game is totally fine with technology, what it is critiquing is the culture around why people are willing to sacrifice and what they are willing to sacrifice.

How is V not a cyberpsycho by the end of the game?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 10:01 PM PST

Not only is he modified in basically every way he CAN be modified, he's also got an entire terrorist inside his head. Everything that makes a cyberpsycho is present in V but... extra.

Maybe none of the endings happened. Maybe it's all just in V's head because he finally snapped and when you think you're breaking into Arasaka you're actually just shredding a strip mall with mantis blades.

"Yeah, I know the place": Dialogue acknowledges exploration!

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:45 PM PST

One of my habits in RPGs is to uncover/unfog as much of the map as I can before even tackling the plot or doing side missions — both just to explore the world before any plot-related events change things, and to unlock fast-travel points. I love it when games acknowledge my wanderlust and pragmatism!

In Cyberpunk, I just drove around Night City and the Badlands, walking into buildings and locations that first seemed just part of the scenery, but I realized was going to later have some kind of mission attached.

I did The Hunt with River Ward (pre-1.5 patch) and while exploring the farm in the BD and scanning enough clues, V outright said that he knew what that place was and could take River there. According to guides, what's supposed to happen is that V and River are supposed to figure out where to go next by using clues and dialogue, and still risk picking the wrong place — but my exploration cut that off and we could just go to the right place.

I had one other moment like that before, when V said a something like "Yeah, I've been there" to a questgiver, but it was so quick and done so offhandedly that I almost didn't notice.

Anyone else find moments like that in the game? Or other little acknowledgments from NPCs that you've already taken care of business?

I don't know. I'm just having the best time. Playing on pc, just started a week ago so I'm getting a good version of it.

It's just so fantastic. The story and pacing and combat and world building and skills and ROMANCES JUDY I LOVE YOU FOREVER.

I'm so pleased. And I'm so sorry it had such a rough launch.

Kudos to the developers --- I'm experiencing all the effort and love you put into this shit. Sorry the money-bags fucked you.

PSA: Follow the main story until Johnny Silverhand is with you

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 10:24 PM PST

Like the title, after patch 1.5 heck every patch you should follow the main story for Johnny Silverhand first before doing any side quest. Or else you will miss a lot of interaction with him.

I makes a new playthrough and play it like Witcher 3 (finished all the side quests in Velen first) until it was too late.
