    Hey Choombas,

Last week the book club topic was Total Recall! Total Recall is a movie that was released in 1990 and remade in 2012. We hope you all had a chance to watch it over the past week. Please discuss what you thought of it below! -- How do you think the remake compares to the original? In what ways has it influenced/been influenced by other Cyberpunk media? Do you plan on role-playing any parts of it while playing Cyberpunk 2077?

As well, last week we posted a poll to vote for this week's book club, and the winner is: Dredd! Dredd is a 2012 movie, based on the comic strip, Judge Dredd.

Please vote on next week's topic! (Options: Altered Carbon Season 2, Westworld Season 3, RoboCop (original + remake))

If you want to see something else in the vote for an upcoming week, please tell us in the comments!

Cyberpunk 2077 - Character Creation “What we know so far”

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:10 PM PDT

I've been trawling versions news and rumor sites for any information I can get on character creation, build diversity, and details about skills lines and their functions within the game.

Some of the more interesting information I haven't seen discussed much are:

    1. The initial starting attributes/perks at character creation VS what we saw on the lvl 18 play through they showed us

    2. How attributes like Intelligence and Technical actually do more than what is immediately obvious

    3. How your backstory may actually influence your starting zone, safe havens, and what potential allies you can recruit to your cause

    4. The map, and why Night City isn't just Night City

    1. CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES & PERKS

From what I've been able to gather, it's not possibly to have a starting attribute (Body, Reflex, Cool, Intelligence, Technical) of less that 3 at character creation.

Based on the sites I've located, it would also appear that you have a maximum of 7 points to distribute to begin with, so a maximum of 22 points across 5 attributes - realistically only 7 points because the first 15 are automatically allocated to the "minimum 3" in each attribute.

The lvl 18 character that was on display during the trailer showed the character with attributes of 4, 4, 7, 9, 9 which means that attributes from leveling up must come relatively frequently and a total of 14 Perk Points spent.

This means that the Attributes have gone from a starting total of 22 to a total of 33 by level 18. This means that across 17 levels there was a 11 point increase - I am unsure of the maths in terms of how they're going to break it down.

The Perks seem to be something you get more frequently but I also know they're tied directly to skill level - you may notice, for instance, that the screen shots of the lvl 18 Netrunner character show them having a Cool of 9, but only Perks available to what you'd expect from a Cool of 6... this is because the actual skill cap (experience on a skill) is what determines your Perk access, not just the Attribute e.g.

Cool of 9 means "skill cap" of 9, but you still need at least rank 8 experience of that specific skill to get access to the level 8 Perk in that skill line - this means that even if you start with a 10 in Cool, because you want to be the best with the Assassination skill, you won't be able to take any higher level Perks straight away until you actually level up Assassination by using it first!

I'm still trying to figure out the maths for how it's all going to play out but it gives you an idea that attributes and skills will come relatively frequently, but "min/maxing" to begin with might actually be disadvantageous because of the way skills are required to be used to level up before perk access, so perhaps a more even spread (or just two high-ish skills?) would be best?

    2. INTELLIGENCE , TECHNICAL, and YOU (and In You)

You may say to yourself "Why do Intelligence and Technical only have one set of skills, where as all the others have so many?" - well done for asking, that's a great question.

My initial thought during my early research was "because hacking things through software (Intelligence) or modifying them through hardware (Technical) are very important in the game and they probably don't need more skills, right?"

    Wrong.

Through my additional research I have been able to find reference to these Attributes not just effecting the individual skills listed under them (Hacking for Intelligence and Engineering for Technical) but also affecting something else rather interesting...

    "Skill Splints" and "Body Modifications"

"Skill Splints" (essentially software/hardware inserted directly into your head) seems to be able to grant you a certain number of ranks in a skill automatically as if you had trained in that skill - essentially meaning that a character with a high Intelligence (but low other attributes) could insert a bunch of Skill Splints into their head to augment their otherwise lackluster skills on other areas, essentially providing them a chance to still be combat effective as they are essentially using the Skill Splint to boost them to whatever rank the inserted ship provides e.g.

You could have a Skill Splint that provides Rank 4 in Rifles, therefore getting you access to whatever associated benefits that rank gets as if you'd trained it naturally, but it would appear that ranks attained this way cannot be improved upon as they're coded to a specific level of proficiency that cannot be added to or superseded.

Skill Splints seemed to be tied directly to the Intelligence attribute and the number you can have inserted into your brain meat is directly tied to this statistic - so far it looks like it might be 1 Skill Splint for every 2 points of Intelligence, maximum of 5 at 10 Intelligence (but I could still be wrong in this).

"Body Modifications" (what you might traditionally call cybernetics) seem to be directly tied to the Technical attribute and seem to be hard limited (in terms of how many augmentations your character can have) the same as Skills Splints are.

This would appear to be a similar situation where someone with, say, a high Technical but low other attributes could still remain combat effective because they would have more options to modify their own bodies to keep them combat ready e.g.

My other attributes are middling, but my Technical is great - how do I survive? By attaching an grip modification directly to my hand that improves my weapon accuracy and damage passively. What about my general survivability (because my Body attribute sucks)? Well shit, lets get some sub-dermal hyper-weave implants you make my skin close to bullet proof.

In this respect, I believe the game is going to provide a considerable amount of build diversity as characters with wildly different Attribute compositions can still be effective in multiple arenas as they can augment themselves to suit their required tasks (perhaps indicating that the Intelligence and Technical routes may require more preplanning than traditions run-and-gun style play?).

    3. WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE'D YOU COME FROM?

This is by far the area in which there is a the least amount of information but I have done my best to pour over resources and put together what I've found so far:

Based on my research, it would appear that your starting choices you make for your background and your "life events" are actually going to play far more of a role in the game than perhaps are immediate obvious - beyond providing the flavor of your character and allowing you to flesh out the concept, they may very well have ramifications for the entire course of your play-through.

There have been some allusions by developers to the fact that choosing specific backgrounds will not only allow you specific character dialogue options (because of your character familiarity with certain areas based on their history) but may very well also open up unique allies and safe havens throughout the play world; areas those with a different background may not have access too!

For instance, choosing the Street Kid option allowed the person playing in the one of the tech demo/play-throughs to have a unique dialogue option when interacting with a Netwatch agent, and during an interview one of the developers expounded upon this by stating that such actions will not only be frequent but will actually alter gameplay, such as how the faction known as the Voodoo Boys initially perceive/are willing to trust you.

This essentially means that, if true, even characters with identical statistics in terms of attributes and skills may still not get the same options for allies and quest resolutions that others with different backgrounds might have access to - again, if true, this means that multiple play-throughs of the game would be encouraged as you'd see different outcomes!

The other choices shown a while back like "childhood hero" and "why night city?" have not been expanded upon as much but my limited info has led me to believe that there will be some quests and dialogue tied to these things as well, hopefully providing additional diversity and options in subsequent play-throughs? [EDITED - these early versions of your backstory may have potentially been cut from the game entirely; awaiting source for confirmation]

Starting zones haven't explicitly been discussed but limited information from translated developer interviews seems to indicate that a tutorial or sorts may very well take place in different starting locations based on your background choice, which may very well also cement your early faction allegiances/allies as those would be directly attached to your starting zones e.g.

I grew up a Nomad, therefore was raised in a clan that moves around, lives with freedom in their hearts, and values indispensable skill/substance over style any day - this means that I will start in a desert like zone (for the tutorial) amongst my nomad brothers and sisters as a part of my introduction to their culture and establishing my characters history.

My hope, of course, is that if this information proves correct it can further solidify unique play-through experiences and give a real sense of place and self to your character, and where they've come from.

    4. BIG CITY LIGHTS AIN'T THE ONLY LIFE

This is an interesting one that I haven't seen discussed much yet:

Apparently, Night City and it's surrounds might not be the only place you go - there is a vast desert place out on the plains, and there may very well also be others cities or locations that haven't been shown yet or are represented on any such map that we've seen.

They confirmed that there are a bunch of different regions in the city (both ground level, subterranean, and sky rise) that will be exploitable, but they've also alluded to the fact that these places may not be "the only places" you go.

In one translated interview it would appear that a developer mentioned being able to go "to another city" - even if only for a specific mission, this seems to indicate that the world might be far bigger that what we've initially seen.

This information, because it comes from a translation, could have been interpreted incorrectly but I'm still hopeful that such a thing exists and there are still surprises in wait for us all at launch!

So... anyone have any more info?

    Did I miss anything?

Clarifications of things I got wrong?

    Let's discuss!

Background Lore in the Cyberpunk World

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:35 PM PDT

I'm not sure how much everyone has dived into the world building pieces of Cyberpunk, but I found a lot of things very interesting from the previous franchise entries.

US Collapse and the Gang of Four

Cyberpunk features a world where the CIA, FBI, NSA and DEA effectively join forces (well sort of) and have virtually no governmental oversight. This leads to a divergent timeline, where the US and EU or EEC (European Economic Community) are at odds in the 1990s - 2020s and the Soviet Union adopts the EuroDollar over the US dollar at the end of the cold war. The gang of four is behind US currency manipulation, covert and overt proxy wars in Central America and the Middle East. Eventually they fall apart, due to US reformations and infighting, but not after decades of damage was done to the US. It's interesting to the see the US fall from grace and having another power of the world be one of the center pieces of the background lore. You usually always have the US or West as the main drivers of everything, so it's an interesting take.

    Corporate Wars

In total you have four (recorded at least) major corporate wars, some start as minor skirmishes or accidents, some are fought over the NET and some (like that 4th war) involve actual countries of the US and Japan and the corporations that are battling one another are based in one country or another. IMO, it helps drive a further narrative of a dystopian power, where mega-corporations have as much power, if not more, than the governmental borders they operate in.

I've encapsulated some of these thoughts and more into a quick lore video is you are interested in hearing more. -> https://youtu.be/qmRMJPwYCTY

Does any have good sources of Cyberpunk lore I can look into? Books, sources etc?

    POE dev talking about Cyberpunk

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 04:33 AM PDT

Do you think this game can be compared to Skyrim?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:44 AM PDT

As the title suggests, do you think it will offer more or less the same freedom as TES? Can I completely ignore the main quest? Will I be able to join different factions (like TES guilds)? Will I be able to kill any character and will my character be arrested?

Will the map be just Night City or will it be bigger?

Thanks in advance. Please don't attack me, I'm very knowledgeable about Cyberpunk 2077.

Looking for others that pre-ordered the 2077 Xbox One X bundle at $1999.99

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:23 PM PDT

On May 21, the Xbox One X Cyberpunk 2077 Limited Edition Bundle offered the option to pre-order for $1999.99 directly from Microsoft. That price tag was quickly confirmed to be false by this Twitter account.

I know several people on this sub went ahead and pre-ordered it (myself included) despite the incorrect cost, and I'm just wondering if anyone has any updates on their order or any further information they have received from Microsoft Support.

The page still exists, but the bundle can no longer be pre-ordered. I spoke over the phone with a Microsoft Support rep today, and was told that if email confirmation was received for the order, that the order indeed went through and my credit card would be charged for the correct amount 10 days beforehand.

Others on Twitter have posted different responses from Microsoft Support which seem to conflict against each other, so I figured it would be worth a shot to get some answers together here from others on this subreddit!

What language will you be playing in during your first playthrough?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:02 AM PDT

What language do you guys prefer in games? My native language is french but i think it would feel weird hearing french in an american city and sometimes some jokes/sentences get lost in translation, so to feel immersed in the game i think english voices are better (i really like the voice acting so far), at least for a first playthrough.

Does it break immersion for you too when you play a game which is set in another part of the world and you hear your native language?
