Cyberpunk Net running and Immersion Posted: 06 Feb 2020 10:13 PM PST Do the descriptions of the net in cyberpunk lit ever take anyone else out of the immersion? I'm a network and systems engineer and the cyber punk writers' conception of the net is so foreign to how I know the internet actually works, when I am reading about or listening to videos on the lore it always takes me out of it when the subject of netrunning comes up. From a political and historical viewpoint (I'm also a politics and history geek) the scenarios that Pondsmith and Gibbons dreamed up actually seem half-way conceivable if you take up a certain political viewpoint and a couple of megadoses of cynicism and pessimism, but I just can't get over how unrealistic netrunning is. Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:12 PM PST We're refunds given? I'm assuming so as I just checked my account balance (as in my Microsoft account) and was pleasingly greeted with £60! I plan to preorder physically now anyway so it's a treat! But is that right? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Feb 2020 06:19 AM PST I was listening to an RSA lecture (sciencey, systems thinking stuff) and in the Q&A a guy in the audience says he's starting a Solarpunk storytelling thing where they are coming up with positive future models to let people envision what a positive future could look like. They see it as a counterpoint to all the dystopian stuff we're inundated with in our entertainment. https://www.google.com/search?q=solarpunk There are links going back as far as 2014. I've honestly never heard of it until today. I know Peter Joseph who did the Zeitgeist trilogy is working on a thing called Interreflections which will attempt to demonstrate a positive future. (It's tough to make utopian fiction because there's no supposedly no conflict, although I'd imagine a true utopia would have conflict and openly acknowledge it and use it for growth.) Anyway, I'm really looking forward to see how C2077 is going to comment on our consumerism and this strange movement to dehumanize ourselves with technology and ink and lose utter respect and dignity for our humanity, each other, and the environment. Where everything becomes surface level signaling, but you never really know what someone is hiding underneath. Trust is gone and with good reason. It's a fascinating world. And it is coming at the most opportune time in human history - a really important time where we adapt and change or suffer a species die off like has happened so many times before. If this game is as popular as we know it's going to be it will affect our culture as strongly as the Matrix film did. We still use those movie concepts as metaphoric language today. -- [link] [comments]
