Regarding Cyberpunk 2077's Marketing Campaign in comparison to The Witcher 3

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:41 PM PST

I've seen a lot of comments here and on twitter about why CD Project Red has been so quiet regarding Cyberpunk 2077 content, especially trailers/gameplays, with the game's release only ~4 months away. This got me curious about their prior strategies and I'm referring specifically to the The Witcher 3, their most recent AAA launch.

The Witcher 3 came out on May 19, 2015. After visiting the official Witcher youtube page, I found a number of videos promoting the game, with the earliest title reveal being published on February 5, 2013. This is only ~2 years prior to the release of the game but these 2 years saw the page post 25 videos largely focused on the contents of the game, videos that ranged from trailers, development insights, recap videos, and so on.

In comparison, the Cyberpunk 2077 youtube page has 15 videos with the earliest being the infamously dated title reveal ~7 years ago. Since then CDPR has posted 3 trailers and 2 gameplays (including the deep dive), with other interesting (this is subjective, of course) content including Mike Pondsmith's early thoughts on the project and the ~1 hour interview with devs.

Now, it is evident that CDPR IS indeed holding back on content BUT I think it is very important to consider a few things. Firstly, take a look at this image. The marketing/PR team ensures the user that efforts are being directed at polishing and developing the actual game rather than creating demos/trailers.

Given where CDPR stand right now in the gaming industry, this makes perfect sense. While The Witcher 2 was a good game (never played it personally but people seemed to like it enough), CDPR was nowhere close to being the behemoth it is today. In fact, the torrent of videos and trailers for The Witcher 3 that I broke down earlier is the reason I bought the game and became a fan in the first place. I'm certain a fair number of you learned of CDPR in the same way. I needed that stream of content since I did not know of ANY games CDPR made and had no frame of reference.

This strategy worked for The Witcher 3 and their strategy is working for Cyberpunk 2077. Rather than expending efforts into creating gameplay videos with voiceovers or getting an cinematic team to create trailers, CDPR are solely focusing on developing the game since Cyberpunk 2077 is already a HUGELY anticipated game. The game is 4 months away from release and the subreddit already has 250k people, CDPR's CEO has also stated that Cyberpunk 2077's pre-order numbers are significantly higher than The Witcher 3's numbers. In addition to this, the company has invested in a solid social media team that engages with fans rather than taking away from development time.

All in all, I just thought it was interesting how the company has taken a different direction. I may be completely off the mark since I'm mostly just speculating and sharing my thoughts. I'm just as impatient as you lot to see something BUT I'd rather play a fully realized vision of CDPR. Having said that, I do think that it would be cool to have a small series about the world of Cyberpunk 2077 since, technically, this is a new world they're building and does, on some level, deserve similar treatment to The Witcher 3. But it's fine, I'm okay with no content..... I swear...

TLDR: Some reasons for CDPR's quietness include: CDPR is tackling a very ambitious project and, arguably, their most challenging project to date; They are a far bigger name in the gaming industry now than they were during Witcher 3's launch meaning they do not need to expend effort into marketing campaigns; The campaign is more focused on keeping fans engaged via social media rather than taking development time away to create demos.

Desert abandoned city battle royale map for Multiplayer

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:20 PM PST

Multiplayer doesn't even have to be limited to just GTA 5 or SWTOR styled. There could easily be a battle royale map you could queue into with other players on a GTA 5 styled multiplayer.

As far as multiplayer goes (and eventual VR multiplayer), I'd like to see a map seperate to the main multiplayer which players could get teleported to, which would be a desolate wasteland with towers spread across the map and an abandoned derelict city in the middle for a battle royale mode, with many towers with spots for sniping. The desert storm would close in on the city and resources will either be fought for on the map, or a mode where no map resources will be available and you have to bring all of your own weapons, armor and items and only ammo drops from players. Exclusive items for winning ranked seasons and tournaments.

It would bring a lot of attention to the game and to VR, as well as competitive esports since BR is really popular and is a huge esports genre. VR doesn't have enough competitive tournaments.

Building mechanics don't even need to be added into the game, they can detract from the FPS experience. Unless we're talking about planting bombs, area shields and building turrets or small shields for cover, those would be great feature additions.
