An analysis of the ”mancala”-style board game in the Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 03:45 AM PDT

You can find the screenshot here First of all I think this a new game invented for CP2077, I couldn't find any completely similar game on the internet. However, I do think it shares some similarities between some other games, namely Mancala or Kalah, Checkers and Backgammon.

These are a few observations taken from the screenshot. The board has 2x6 pits with end zones at each end, like Kalah, but is played with two colors; white and black and overall very few pieces. White player seems to have six stones while black player have seven, maybe a starting player disadvantage. The stones can occupy three places: the pits, the end zone, and of the board. Only one stone can be in any one pit.

These are my speculations about the gameplay. The game is played in a clockwise manner, like backgammon and the objective is to; either get all your stones in your end zone or capture all of your opponents' stones. In the setup, stones are placed either in a set starting pattern or players take turns placing or moving their stones. Players then take turns to move their stones one pit in a clockwise manner, you may not enter an opponents' end zone but simply skip to the next pit, a stone may not enter a pit with another stone already in it. A stone can "jump" an opponents' stone to capture it, if possible, multiple opponent stones may be captured, like in checkers. Captured stones are taken from the board, but may be placed back on the board in your opponents area, furthest away from your end zone. I do not think stones are removed from play, because the players in the screenshot have their stones in front of them, and not to the side, but this is just speculations.

With these rules, I think you can sort of concoct different strategies from the game state in the screenshot, but these rules may be too simple and may create an infinite loop of plays, but there might be a rule against repetition like in chess. Additional rules may be stones can jump and capture in either direction or are "locked" in some instances. Anyways these are just my thoughts, what are yours?
