spoiler below for Charles Bucks ripperdoc character, side quests to find a note for Sandra Dorsett and a gig from fixer Regina to retrieve the laptop "Last Login"

    ***

Ripperdoc Charles Bucks, which we can visit anytime in Kabuki, Watson, seems to be ordinary - just another cyber implant vendor. It is true that his nonchalant "cunning" attitude is a bit surprising, but in fact it's Night City - apparently even such a character can become Ripperdoc. When asked how he is doing in business, he replies that at the beginning it was hard, but two years ago he met the right people and he is doing better. The most important thing, according to him, is to have the right contacts.

There are locked doors in his "clinic" and you need an access card to open them. About that later.

We have two tasks to complete nearby - one side task for Sandra Dorsett is to help retrieve a stolen note, the other one is gig for Regina to recover the client's laptop. It turns out that both tasks are related to a local gang of scavengers - human kidnappers to remove their cyber implants and sell them on the black market.

The note with the data for Sandra Dorsett is on the ground floor - if the player plays in the 'from the quest marker to the next quest marker' mode, he will simply take the note and leave the location, he will not learn anything else.

However, if the player wants to explore the room or performs the task of finding the laptop at the same time, he will go to the basement of the building - there he will find the scavengers during the "operation" and the laptop that he is looking for. After taking it, if the player comes back as the quest marker tells him - again, he won't learn anything more, that's a typical "generic" job.

But if the player wants to be inquisitive, he can discover the facts connecting the scavengers' operations to the ripperdoc - searching the basement will find the stairs leading to the back of the ripperdoc clinic - this is the blocked door. Ripperdoc is very surprised by the player coming in from this side and explains that he was held and forced to cooperate by the scavs. The player has two options - either he will believe the doc and nothing else will happen or he will not believe - then Ripperdoc offers a discount in exchange for the player's silence. The player has two more options - either to agree to the deal or to disagree. In the first case, we get a fairly solid% discount to trade, in the second case, the doc runs away. Again, we have two options - we can either let him get away or run after him and kill him - then we'll get a star from the police for killing an innocent person.

If, while in the basement, the player searches a little harder, he will find a computer with a message that Ripperdoc Buck is threatening scavs that his bosses will find out about their stealing expensive medicines. The player can use this knowledge when confronting the doc and prove to him that the player knows everything and that he is lying. Buck goes straight to making his corrupt offer. The rest is unchanged.

What happens when, after staying in the basement and discovering the illegal scavs clinic, the player returns to the ripperdoc, but by the normal route instead of exploring the stairs connecting them? Nothing, the player has no evidence that Buck is involved in the scavengers' activities. Although everything takes place within the same building, it is quite large, the entrances are from different sides and lead along narrow alleys, and it is difficult to see that both situations are happening in the same place.

But what happens when the player reads the email that proves Buck's connection to the scavs and returns to him the usual way, not a shortcut through his office? Buck sits as if nothing had happened (he does not know that the player was in the scavs basement), but the player obtains an additional dialogue option in which he can accuse Buck of a criminal activity. Ripperdoc is clearly surprised and has a different dialogue set up for the occasion - he doesn't talk about being kidnapped because he knows the player knows the truth - he then goes on to present his corrupt offer.

    Summarizing:

We can decide on 4 different ways to solve Buck's situation:

    - believe his lies - then he comes back to being a regular ripperdoc and trading with us

    - do not believe / have evidence of his lies and accept the cooperation offer, we get a shopping discount (very attractive)

    - not to believe and not accept the offer and let him escape (theoretically the worst option, because we gain nothing)

    - not to believe him and kill him and be accused by the police of murdering an innocent person (we get a blue loot as a reward on the body of a ripperdoc)

    - I think there is a fifth option, in my opinion it does not work due to a bug - if we have evidence in the form of an e-mail, we can shoot him like a regular bandit, without involving the police. This is indicated by minor bugs in the dialogue when using the "e-mail proof" card and it is dictated by the logic of similar situations in other tasks (killing scum involved in criminal activities without police consequences)

The last 3 options I assume are purely for roleplay purposes, because I cannot tell if we let him go, he shows up later in the game or disappears forever, or if his death is recorded somewhere in some email (which may be likely) . Such a curiosity - after escaping, by running after him, we can find out that he escapes to the car and leaves it somewhere (which is also a bit buggy, he drives the car while sitting on the passenger's side)

Interestingly, we have the opportunity to solve his situation without engaging in any of these two side quests leading us to him - we can hack the door in his office and get to the basement this way and discover his activities. After returning by the same path, the same situation activates - he is surprised and acts as a victim of kidnapping by scavs.

From other curiosities, in this lair, the sacavengers have an e-mail in which they describe in detail our action with the recovery of Sandra Dorsett in the prologue - I am curious if we will complete this mission quietly (which is difficult, but feasible) whether it will be another message there. After all, no one saw us, so who could have described us? In many missions, the game records how we went through a given mission and, on this basis, changes dialogues or some side messages.

    ***

This is just a small curiosity that is not communicated to the player in any way. We do not get the task 'check suspicious ripperdoc activity', in these two tasks we do not have any "[optional]: check who is picking up the goods from the scavs" - this is just a small variation that shows how many elements in this game overlap and affect each other : a seemingly ordinary trader, entering the right door, getting (or not) some information and how, on this basis, we have an impact on his further fate.

There is also a broader context here: those "mighty bosses" that ripperdoc mentions in the e-mail and dialogue with us. I haven't seen any specific information about who they might be, but my guess is it's one of many many tiny narrative building blocks for a future expansion, as is Sandra Dorsett, the laptop guy and scanvergers in all of this.
